What is Indie music?

Independent music What is Indie music?  Independent music  (often shortened to  indie music  or  indie ) is music produced independently from major commercial record labels or their subsidiaries, a process that may include an autonomous, do-it-yourself approach to recording and publishing. The term  indie  is sometimes also used to describe a genre (such as indie rock and indie pop); as a genre term, “indie” may include music that is not independently produced, and most independent music artists do not fall into a single, defined musical style or genre, and usually create music that can be categorized into other genres. Record labels Independent labels have a long history of promoting developments in popular music, stretching back to the post-war period in the United States, with labels such as Sun Records, King Records, and Stax. In the United Kingdom during the 1950s and 1960s, the major record companies had so much power that inde...

THIS IS THE DANNY JOHNSON BAND…. OR IS IT?

“The Blues Is Back…And It’s Alive And Well!” – in the heart and the hands of Danny Johnson! About two years ago, Danny retired from “playing out”…which means he did not really perform any more.  After a life time of making a living playing as a performing musician, He finally got burned out of traveling, setting up and tearing down equipment.  Many of us can relate to this. Danny has never lost his love of playing…but for now, the fire is out for performing live. He wanted to spend more time at home with my family. If you ask Danny e will tell you “God has been gracious to me…I have a beautiful wife, a loving family, a warm home…financially comfortable…physically healthy…happy and still filled with a love for music and the creative spirit behind it.” For years he has been writing and recording songs from his home studio. “As long as I have been doing this…I have always enjoyed this creative process…how you sta...

CHECK OUT BANNERS – “SOMEONE TO YOU”

CHECK OUT BANNERS – “SOMEONE TO YOU” (SINGLE) Banners –  Someone to you (single) Over the last year, in my role as a writer for Back Stage Indie Report, nobody has caught my attention the way Banners has, his voice, his music stylings his lyrics make him in my opinion a total package. This latest single does not disappoint. Hard driving beats and a great tempo matched with a voice that grabs you the moment you hear it, this is a great song.  According to his Wikipedia page Michael Joseph Nelson, known under the stage name Banners (styled as BANNΞRS), is an English musician from Liverpool. He released his debut EP Banners in January 2016 through Island Records, following three singles released in 2015: “Ghosts”, “Shine a Light” and “Start a Riot”. All of which are on heavy rotation on my iPod. As it is with several of the Back Stage Indie Report staff.  I have seen live clips on YouTube and he is equally as compelling live. Check him out and make him big. Mi...

Why Indie Musicians Quit?

Image
WHY INDIE MUSICIANS QUIT What makes us just give-up??? We at   Back Stage Indie report  know lots of musicians, many achieving success, many scratching out a living, and many letting their passion and talent go to replace it with more “traditional” types of employment.  So… why do some give it up and what do they do next?   Back Stage Indie Report   looked at the five most common reasons the dream is put on the proverbial shelf. 1. Money. Most indie recording artist play multiple instruments in their recordings (can’t afford session musicians), consider the amount of cash needed to create just one single finished song or act in order for it to garner enough attention to be considered a success. Lets face it, most musicians are not independently wealthy but creative souls trying to earn a buck from their god given talent.  It’s physically and emotionally taxing when talent alone does not take you to a  sustainable cash flow. ...
