A Heck of a Deal!

I know you’ve seen them, those picture in music industry magazines where the studio furniture in the control room looks like the bridge of a fine yacht. Rich woods with vintage or contemporary finishes stuffed with metal gear full of big knobs and meters. It usually then you look around your studio and realize that you’re not impressing any potential clients here. Oh, to dream… Look, we all know that it’s the room acoustics, the producer, engineer and the gear that makes the music the artist performs sound great. If you have ever recorded clients you are aware, they don’t truly understand most of what you do. But, they do know the “perceived” value of your services for them once they see your facility. Like in any other business we must wear our success on our sleeve. So why do we tend to build the man-cave instead of that bridge on the yacht? That’s an easy one… MONEY! When faced with buying that $800 optical compressor or that $800 piece of quality studio furniture, any gearhead will tell you, it’s a no-brainer. But, what if it wasn’t? What if you could afford to get your prized gear in beautiful solid finished wood racks in custom sized (2U – 18U) finished wood furniture with a color and finish you select for no more than you probably paid for that black plastic or press board thing you bought on the internet? Well, you probably already figured out where this was going… You can! You can have the studio look of your dreams! You just need to know where to get it. Back Stage Indie Report has found a small US manufacturer that does just that, Nice-Racks. You tell them the size you need by how many rack mount units you want to fit. Then select from a huge pallet of finishes. If you want it straight or angled (decorative curved is also an option) and they will get started right-away. They are NOT one of these private fabricators that makes you wait 6-8 weeks. The studio at Back Stage Indie Report (image inset above) have been using them for years. Our forth has just arrived for our new LA-2A.

Who Is Nice-Racks?

In 1997, while putting together a small home recording studio in his garage, David Tatelbaum knew it was time to do some shopping for studio racks to hold his gear. He was looking for something unique and attractive that would add a touch of style to the room, but wouldn’t empty my bank account. He searched the Internet and found a number of studio rack manufacturers, but most of their products were simply particle-board covered in black laminate or simulated wood grain. Others were of fine quality but were well out of his price range. So David thought…”Why not just build a rack myself?”. He Could paint it any color he wants, stain it, make it any size he needs, and probably save a few bucks in the process. So… he did. Actually, he made a few more than he needed, and posted the extras up for sale online. They sold almost immediately. In fact, not only did they sell quickly, but he also received several requests for more and a few inquiries about some custom racks.
David has been very busy ever since.
David Tatelbuam is a true craftsman. This is not some assembly line in Malaysia but an artisan carpenter at a work bench here in the USA. Nice-Racks are constructed of solid Pine furniture grade panels…not just pressed wood or particle board covered in a laminate like some studio racks, but 100% real wood. The panels are cut to size and the components joined together securely using pocket-hole construction and self-tapping pocket-hole screws. The front sides and top edges are rounded, then the racks are sanded and stained. The finish is a clear matte enamel, scuff sanded between coats, to preserve the look and feel of real wood. Finally, hardware is installed and the fully assembled rack is boxed up and shipped out to its new home.

“Nice-Racks are designed to accommodate standard 19” rackmountable studio gear. The rack rails are constructed of durable, high-quality steel with black powder-coat finish and are included and installed on every rack. They are threaded to accept standard 10-32 rack screws and are full hole spaced. Every rack also comes standard with 4 rubber feet installed. I can also install casters and/or handles for an additional charge. And you can choose from any one of the attractive Minwax oil & water based stain colors that best match your decor.” – David Tatelbaum

Nice-Racks is a one-man operation run out of a small workshop in my basement. Each and every rack is made by me personally and is constructed completely by hand, not thrown together on an assembly line…so every rack is totally unique. “You can be assured that your rack is assembled with just as much care and attention to detail as that first rack I made for myself back in 1997“.

Whats Next For Nice-Racks?

As far as new products, David recently added a line of hardwood racks. He offer a few of the smaller ones on the Nice-Racks website, and they generate inquiries for other sizes and custom stuff. Other than that, the offerings have pretty much been the same since the beginning. We at Back Stage Indie Report are looking forward to seeing what future designs will come from the creative mind of Davis Tatelbaum. We will be following Nice-Racks closely to bring it to you first.
